List of household items that can help to soundproof a door

Popular household items are carpets, foam, weatherstripping, rugs, curtains, and many more. Yet, the noise reduction effect is completely dependent upon their masses. Heavy mass items can reduce more noise than light mass items.

Cover using rugs or carpets

Rugs or carpets are the most useful and cheapest items for reducing noise in the room. Carpets or rugs lay on the floor containing heavy masses of material inside it. Not exactly, the heavy masses, the density of the material are enough to absorb the sound.

I completely covered my room’s floor using the carpet which cost me cheaper than other solutions. Laying down the carpets is not heavy-duty to execute for soundproofing your room. I’d recommend using a heavy carpet of rugs to absorb more sound.

Benefits of using carpets/rugs to soundproof a door:

  • It is a cheaper module than other respective soundproofing items.
  • It is easy to manage and doesn’t capture too much space.
  • Carpets are replaceable and washable items in the household.

Different colorful carpets are available on amazon for decorating your floor. Thus you can use carpets to soundproof a door.

Installation guide:

The confusing thing is how to install carpets or rugs on the floor along with the door. Place the carpet or rug on the bottom of the door called a Sweeping area the door.

After this installation, you may face the issue of opening or closing the door. And that problem occurs at the very beginning of those days. After tight pushing or pulling the door, that problem will resolve.

But I’d recommend using your nail or any kind of stick for pushing that carpet under the door. Check out my recommended carpet for you.

Seal the cracks and holes

Generally, in the door, several cracks and holes present there. Proper sealing can help to reduce the noise and prevent sounds from traveling. Find the cracks and holes on your door.

How to find cracks and holes on doors

Turn off the room light and I’d prefer to do this operation at night time. After turning off all the lights, switch on the flashlight and inspect all the doors. When you identify any kinds of cracks or holes on the door, add Green glues or similar kinds of items on that section.

Now, the entire door is hole-free, and there is less chance for traveling air between rooms to outside of the room.

However, you can use several kinds of tape for preventing sound transmission.

Use DIY weatherstripping

Do you know what weatherstripping is?

I can promise that you have seen this weatherstrip on someone’s door but you are not familiar with this term.

Let me explain this weatherstripping in brief. Weatherstripping is a plastic or rubber kind of material that can use on the bottom of the door or windows. This process helps to prevent sound or temperature.

Benefit of weatherstripping:

  • It can prevent the noise from coming from beneath the door.
  • It comes with thermal leaking protection. So, you can get a higher temperature inside the room during a winter night.
  • It can prevent the rainwater leakage during the rainy season.
  • It can prevent insects from entering the room through the bottom of the door.

Using weather stripping is another good recommendation from my side.

How to install a weather strip on the door?

According to the length of the door, you can order a Weatherstrip from online platforms. After that, attach that weather strip on the bottom side of the door.

If you face any kind of toughness, use your nails or sticks for attaching this weatherstrip to the door.

Here is the best tutorial as an installation guide:

Door Painting

Door Painting is another solution for making a soundproofing door.

Do you know? – Wood is the best medium for traveling sound within it. As per a science report, any solid material helps to travel sound 17 times faster than the air medium.

So you can imagine that wooden doors can’t be used as a soundproofing door.

Meanwhile, painting is a good insulator for soundproofing items. Simply, buy paint from a store and paint on the door using the brush. You can an extra layer of paint for acting as a better insulator. And it is a decorative solution for your home.

Use Curtain in front of the door

Using curtains will be another alternative solution to soundproof a door. Curtains are a good insulator for the sound and it is also a household item. There are special curtains used for soundproofing a door.

Thick curtains are more preferable to thin curtains. As earlier I have written that the thick material acts as a better insulator than the thin material.

Benefits of using the curtain as a sound insulator:

  • It is easy to install and easy to maintain (like washing, keeping clean).
  • According to your choice, you can pull the curtain and make a soundproofing door.
  • You can choose curtains according to your design.

I’d recommend using special kinds of curtains for soundproofing your room. And, you can use them as your normal curtain but thickness should be the most priority.

Change Old weatherstripping

Previously, I have told you about the weather stripping and how that can help to soundproof your room. But depending on the time, weather stripping gets damaged and it can’t work as a good insulator.

You just need a knife for cutting that weather stripe from the door and removing it from the door. After removing that weather strip, you can make that strip at your home using that kind of material. like a rubber band or metal band depending upon the type of door. If you have metal doors, it would be better to use rubber-based weatherstripping.

And this way you can prevent the sound from interchanging the room.

Use a soundproof blanket or duvets for a door:

After curtains, blankets or duvets are the good insulators of the sound. Generally, blankets are thicker than the curtains. So, I’d suggest using blankets instead of using curtains. Installation blankets on the doors are similar to curtain installation. There are certain hooks that can hold this blanket. And use curtain clips for holding the blankets behind the door. Here are the best-handpicked clips you can check.

As the blankets or duvets are thicker and heavier than the curtain, it becomes more terrible during washing. I’d recommend using a soundproof blanket rather than a home blanket.

Use foams floor tiles

Foams are the best insulator for a sound. Foams are lightweight, easy to installable behind the door. Foams floor tiles are usually built with EVA rubber which is very durable and dense. Alternatively, you can use your kid’s playing matte or yoga matte for soundproofing.

Foams are installed on the door using nails or glue. Attaching through nails are more stable than glue. Much like carpet, it would be an alternative to the carpet. But I’d recommend using carpet installation in the room. So that you can cover the soundproofing for both the door and the room.

Use DIY acoustic door plug

An acoustic door plug connects with the bottom side of the door. And it helps to soundproof and waterproof your door. It is completely connected and attached to the door so that it can’t transmit any kind of sound through that door.

Door plugs are easily available on amazon otherwise you can build them on your own.

Guide to build acoustic door plug

  • Choose the exact length of MDP or plywood (I’d recommend using MDP as this is lighter and cheaper than plywood.) according to the door.
  • Buy some heavy-density vinyl that will act as an insulator.
  • Add some foam on that MDP and wrap it with the vinyl.
  • Now, the door plug is ready to attach with the door bottom using some nail or glue.

Using an acoustic door plug may be tough to move the door but gradually it fixes that issue as well.

Cover door using MLV

MLV is known as Mass Loaded Vinyl paper. MLV is generally used as a wrapper and it is a great insulator. Wrapping up your door using MLV is a cost-effective solution for a soundproofing door.MLV is water-resistant, flexible, and exceeding durable. And it helps to prevent transferring sound waves. At the store, you can get certain meters of Mass loaded vinyl paper. But you have to measure the area of your door for finding the perfect size of MLV.
