The spectrum has been assigned to telecom operators after the 2022 5G auctions, and we are now waiting for the launch of 5G network services in India. Reliance Jio has been creating quite a buzz among the telecoms for a pan-Indian Jio 5G launch in 2022.
Jio has a unique position in the market due to its acquisition of the 5G airwaves, development of a custom 5G network stack, and potential support for the 5Gi standard developed in India.
Therefore, you have come to the proper spot if you have any questions concerning Jio 5G rollout plans. We have discussed the Jio 5G India debut date, its 5G band support, the list of cities where Jio 5G will launch, and other topics in this post. Let’s get started straight away on that point.
Jio 5G Launch in India: All You Need to Know
We have outlined what we know about Reliance Jio 5G network services in India in this post. We have covered all the bases in this post, including the Jio 5G launch date and the 5G bands that are supported. So, let’s start with the 5G spectrum that the Indian telecom has purchased and extend the chart below.

Jio 5G Spectrum: 5G Bands in India
Jio 5G has acquired 24.7 GHz of spectrum in the 5G auctions for Rs 88,078 crores conducted by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India. Jio is the top bidder since it has the most spectrum in India (26.77 GHz).
Reliance Jio has bought 5G bands in 700MHz (n28), 800MHz (n5), 1800MHz (n3), 3300MHz (n78), and the premium 26GHz (n258). The 700MHz band is the nifty band that penetrates rural areas in India and offers 5G services at a low cost. This lower band provides less speed but is faster than 4G/LTE and covers long distances in India.
Jio has made its position clear in the low-band 5G spectrum all over India. It bought the 700MHz band in 22 circles, 800MHz sub-GHz bands in 4 circles, 1800MHz sub-6GHz bands in 6 crucial circles, and the 3300MHz bands for all 22 circles in India. Find out the complete list of Jio 5G allocation in the table below.
|Circle||700MHz (Paired)||800MHz (Paired)||1800MHz (Paired)||3300MHz (Unpaired)||26GHz (Unpaired)|
|Jammu & Kashmir||10||5||–||130||1000|
|Uttar Pradesh (East)||10||–||10||100||1000|
|Uttar Pradesh (West)||10||5||–||130||1000|
Jio 5G Rollout: Launch Date
Jio has not yet publicly confirmed the launch date of its 5G service, but Reliance Jio’s chairman, Akash Ambani, recently stated that the business will mark “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” with a 5G rollout across India. According to rumours, Reliance Jio would likely begin its 5G services on August 15, 2022, India’s 75th Independence Day.
However, this statement might be for a pilot test in certain metro cities or regions around India. Jio would need a month or two to completely roll out its 5G services in major Indian cities. Following that, a staggered deployment in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities might begin early next year.
Jio 5G Supported Cities in India
As we have said, Jio has purchased 5G bands for all 22 circles, therefore Jio 5G will be available throughout all of India. The company’s 5G services, however, would reportedly launch in 9 cities at first, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Jamnagar. Other cities like Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Chandigarh, and Pune could be included.
Aside from that, Jio has finished 5G coverage planning in over 1000 places, indicating that a pan-India deployment is approaching. Jio employed heat maps, 3D maps, and ray tracing technology to design coverage based on targeted user usage and income potential. Furthermore, it has undertaken experiments for a variety of 5G use-cases, including virtual and augmented reality, low-latency cloud gaming, online live TV streaming, and telemedicine.
Do You Need a New Jio 5G SIM?
No Indian telecom provider has said that a new 5G SIM is necessary to use the 5G network, as we have noticed. Therefore, if you already have a Jio 4G SIM, using Jio’s 5G service should be possible without any issues or SIM upgrades. Having said that, we are keeping a careful eye on this area, and if Jio releases a new 5G SIM card policy, we will update the page.
Jio 5G Upload/ Download Speeds
Jio has performed 5G testing in 8 cities and recorded varying levels of 5G speed. According to a recent report, Jio’s 5G experiment in Mumbai provided download rates that were up to 8 times higher than those of 4G. It looks like Jio 5G will offer download rates of up to 420 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 412 Mbps, which is a significant improvement above India’s 4G capabilities. Jio has built its own 5G network stack using Open-RAN tech which will be a win for Jio.
Jio 5G Plans and Price in India
It is too early to predict Jio’s 5G plans and price in India. However, given Reliance Jio’s competitive tactics, we anticipate Jio’s 5G package will cost between Rs 400 and Rs 500 per month. Currently, Jio’s ARPU (average revenue per user) is about Rs 175.
In the upcoming years, Jio will be able to significantly raise its ARPU thanks to 5G services. But be aware that Jio could roll out a two-tier 5G strategy for services using sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum. We anticipate that the prices for the mid-band 5G services would be fair. Once we obtain additional information, we will continue to update this post.
Last Words on Rollout of Jio 5G in India
That’s everything we know at the moment about the rollout of Reliance Jio 5G in India. We have tried to cover the launch date, band support, speed, and pricing of the Reliance Jio 5G. If there is one thing to take away from all of this, it is that Jio will be a key role in making 5G a mainstream network in India.
