WhatsApp Bans Over 22 Lakh Indian Accounts in June 2022

WhatsApp, the global messaging platform of Meta has published its monthly report of banned accounts for June 2022. According to Rule 4(1)(d) of the Indian Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code 2021) Rules, WhatsApp bans over 22 Lakh Indian accounts in June between 1st to 30th in 2022.

In a statement, the company said, “The published report is following Rule 4(1)(d) of the Information Technology Rules, 2021. The report contains information about taken actions of WhatsApp in response to the received Grievances from Indian users via the grievance mechanisms of WhatsApp. Also, the accounts detected for violating the laws of India or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service are taken under actioned in India through our prevention.”

In April and May, WhatsApp banned over 16 Lakh and 19 lakh accounts respectively in the country. And, WhatsApp received 632 grievance reports in June from India, and the platform has taken action over 64 of the reports. 426 grievance reports out of the 632 reports, were for a ban appeal, and the rest reports were under the categories of support and safety.

In May 2022, WhatsApp received 528 grievance reports and took action over 24 reports of them. Moreover, the report includes information about the tools and resources deployed by WhatsApp to prevent harmful behaviour. It also added an abuse detection operator in three stages, i.e., at registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback of user reports and blocks.

The company said, “We are particularly focused on prevention as it’s much better to stop the harmful activity before it harms.” According to Techvaio, it’s quite logistic. Detection will take time, and the bad account will harm in that time. Taking action after that will not retain the affected account or user to the previous. So, it would be more effective to prevent an instant.
